On the Gulf Coast, hurricane season is not a question of if but when. Hurricane Ike in 2008 and Harvey in 2017 both hit the Texas City area hard, and every season since has brought tropical systems close enough to matter. A little preparation goes a long way toward keeping your roof on and the water out.

Start early. The time to find weak spots is before the forecast turns red, not when a tropical storm is three days out and every roofer is booked.

Get a pre-season roof inspection

A professional inspection finds lifted shingles, cracked pipe boots, worn flashing, and weak valleys before wind-driven rain does. Fixing these in calm weather is cheaper and calmer than emergency repairs during storm season.

Trim trees near the roof

Overhanging branches scrape shingles in high wind and become projectiles in a hurricane. Trim limbs back so they cannot reach the roof, and remove dead trees that could fall on the house.

Clean gutters and check drainage

Clogged gutters send water back under the roof edge and against the fascia. Clear them before season starts, and make sure downspouts carry water away from the foundation.

Secure loose items around the yard

Patio furniture, grills, and decorations become missiles in hurricane winds. Have a plan to bring them inside or secure them when a storm approaches.

Know where your shutoffs are

If the roof does fail during a storm, knowing how to shut off power to affected areas and where the water is entering helps you limit damage until help arrives.

After the storm: inspect before the next rain

Once it is safe, look for missing shingles, debris damage, and new ceiling stains. Wind can break shingle seals without visible tearing, so a professional post-storm inspection is worth it even when everything looks fine from the ground. If water is coming in, our emergency roof tarping service stops the damage from spreading.
